Payment cards are increasingly seen as an attractive alternative to cash and checks, but are cash and checks being completely swept aside? This session focuses on the continuing electronification of payments, particularly innovations within the global card industry. Speakers from both the cash and card perspectives will examine advancements and breakthroughs in card adoption, issuance and acceptance from the perspective of users, banks, service providers, and payment system operators as well as improvements to payment convenience and efficiency. Can paper and plastic co-exist?

SEPA implementation began in January and while the immediate impacts are still being realized, this session examines what the industry may look like in years to come. How will the "next generation" of payment instruments be affected by SEPA? Dr. Michael Salmony, who is a member of the European Payments Council (EPC) on innovative payments/eSEPA examines SEPAs potential impacts, and opportunities, with regard to Internet and mobile payments and e-invoicing. How can banks continue to make use of value-added services in light of SEPA and how can SEPA payments be used in new ways to generate extra volume? How can banks add value to business customers? How far will SEPA go and how will the initiative impact the rest of the international payments landscape?

Additional topics include the role of banks in corporate operations and corporate practitioners' experiences as direct members of SWIFT. What are ways corporate practitioners have used innovations to address infrastructure challenge? Speakers also explore the advantages of forming a collective voice to drive corporate interests forward in the global payments landscape. Aite Group conducted a benchmarking study analyzing trends such as the creation of payment factories, demands for real-time global data for better liquidity management and a greater dependence on technology. The results of the study are examined during this session.
