Nacha Board Chair Says ‘The Future is Solid’ for ACH

Ask Joe Hussey about the prospects for the ACH Network and he’ll tell you why he believes “the future is solid.” It starts with the more than 33 billion payments processed annually.

“That is core to the U.S. infrastructure. It’s core to the economic power that sits within the U.S. and other geographies as well,” said Hussey, Managing Director, Global Payments and Liquidity at Wells Fargo, and Nacha Board Chair.

The ACH Network “has built a foundation that is trusted,” said Hussey. “It’s also very much relied upon by industry, corporates, governments, as well as multiple other use cases.”

As a four-decade veteran of the banking industry who started as a teller in college, Hussey was pleasantly surprised by the consistent double-digit annual growth for Same Day ACH, with volume exceeding 1 million payments for the first time in 2024.

“I don’t know that I would have predicted. I’m sure I wouldn’t have predicted that we were going to have the growth we’ve had in the last couple of years on Same Day ACH,” Hussey told Nacha’s Payments SmartCast podcast. In fact, when asked what he expects to see in the coming years, he answered, “The consumer is going to continue to want speed.”

Another issue is one that has been faced in the present and is certain to be faced in the future: fraud.

“The scammers are getting more creative, so we need to continue to match that,” said Hussey.

The podcast was recorded during Smarter Faster Payments 2025, a conference to which Hussey annually brings dozens of members of his team. He sees it as a solid investment in the people who work not only for him, but for Wells Fargo and its customers.

“The biggest thing I have found is you’ve got to build a great team,” said Hussey. “You’ve got to trust your team.”
