2021 Q2 Volume and Value
Robust growth continued for the modern ACH Network in the second quarter of 2021. Payment volume climbed 9.9%, with particularly strong growth in business-to-business (B2B) payments.
The ACH Network processed 7.3 billion payments in the second quarter, 655 million more than the same time in 2020. The value of those payments was $18.4 trillion, an increase of 24.6% from a year earlier.
B2B payments increased 28.7%, to 1.3 billion payments.
2020 ACH Network Volume
There were 7 billion payments made on the ACH Network during the fourth quarter of 2020, reflecting an 8.9% increase over the same period in 2019.
ACH growth accelerated in key areas that represent a quickening shift away from check payments. Payments to individuals by Direct Deposit increased by 11.1% to more than 2 billion. Internet-initiated consumer ACH payments for bills and other account transfers grew by 15.2% to more than 2 billion. Person-to-person (P2P) payments completed by ACH grew by 44% to 62 million. Business-to-business (B2B) payments by ACH for vendor and supply chain payments rose almost 15% to 1.2 billion.
Same Day ACH volume climbed 35.7% over a year earlier, with 96.7 million payments in the fourth quarter.

Healthcare ACH Volume
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandated the identification of a healthcare EFT standard, Nacha’s CCD+ Addenda, as a HIPAA transaction. Since it went into effect in January 2014, health plans are now required to deliver the healthcare EFT standard to providers upon request. When used in combination with electronic remittance advice (ERA), the healthcare EFT standard can help streamline processes and create cost savings.
